There has been much debate surrounding which concepts and skills should be emphasized in elementary mathematics teaching, and how this should be done in classrooms. In this working group, we will focus on the findings of two research projects that relate to this ongoing conversation. Questions such as the following will be discussed: What is mathematics for teaching, why do we need it, and how can teachers learn it? and, How does/should upper elementary mathematics curriculum/teaching relate to its secondary school counterpart, and how can this relationship be explored/fostered in professional development initiatives?
