Research Interests

My research interests fall under the general umbrella of discrete applied mathematics, mainly focusing on applications in coding for data communication and storage. Current research activities are in the following areas:

- Error-correcting codes: using the structure theory of matroids to develop a decomposition theory for linear codes, and its applications to decoding algorithms

- Constrained coding and symbolic dynamics: study of minimal right-resolving presentations of 1-dimensional sofic shifts; analysis of higher-dimensional constraints

- Coding for DNA computing: designing error-correcting codes for 2-dimensional DNA self-assembly

- Coding for optical communications: developing simple coding and modulation schemes to combat nonlinear impairment in the fibre-optic channel
