USRA
2012 Summer Employment
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA) Program for research in the natural sciences and engineering
APPLICATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, 21 February 2012
If you are considering a research career in the mathematical sciences and would like to get some experience we would like to invite you to apply for an NSERC USRA through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen's University.
For the coming summer, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics anticipates being able to award up to five NSERC USRAs to qualified undergraduate students for work on research projects in one of the many areas supported by our department. A list of the faculty members who have expressed an interest in recruiting a student through this program can be found here.
The NSERC USRA is valued at $4500 and will be supplemented with an additional 25% (minimum) from the research supervisor. Depending on the applicant's year of study, this supplement could be significantly more than 25%. Students are required to work 16 consecutive weeks, on a full-time basis, between May and August. A travel allowance may also be granted to successful applicants whose home university is not Queen's University.
Eligible students should submit the following documents directly to the department at the address below by Tuesday, 21 February 2012:
- NSERC Form 202, Part I You must apply using NSERC's online system. Please forward your reference number to Jennifer Read once you have completed and verified the application. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
- An official transcript showing grades received up to and including the Fall 2011 term. Applicants from Queen's University do NOT need to provide a transcript.
- A Resume
- The title of the project(s) in which you are interested and a brief statement about why you are interested in and qualified for each project. If you are interested in more than one project please rank them in order of preference.
- The name and email address of one faculty member who is familiar with your academic performance and research ability/potential and who could be contacted to provide a reference if necessary
Applicants will be judged on their academic record and research aptitude. Fit between student and project will also be an important factor in the final selection process and therefore students are encouraged to contact faculty directly to discuss projects. Successful applicants will be contacted by 12 March 2012.
