This is me in front of a blackboard on which you will find an important question. Please send me the answer should you figure it out before I do.

oResearch Interests:

I am interested in algebraic topology and invariant theory and the connections between them. In more detail, I study homotopy theory and the invariant theory of finite groups, mostly over finite fields where much less is known than in the classical cases of characteristic 0. I work with Ian Hughes, Jim Shank and David Wehlau. We're having a lot of fun with this! Chuai Jianjun, from China, finished his PhD in July 2003 and is now a PDF with the Invariant Theory Group at Queen's. Graduate students in the group include Letitia Banu from Romania, Emilie Dufresne from Laval, and Yu Wingling from China. Christopher Brav, from St Olaf's College in Minnesota, finished his MSc last summer and is now working on his PhD with Mike Roth.

I've written a brief description of some things I find fascinating if you are care to look --- some interesting open problems

We keep upgrading our computation engines so we can examine bigger examples and, er, enlarge our understanding. We have three older computation engines “Dickson”, “Steenrod” and “Noether” (Emmy). We'll be acquiring a new machine Real Soon Now, probably a PowerMac of some kind. We use the symbol manipulating language “MAGMA” from Australia, which seems better than Maple for some of our calculations. It appears the bottleneck for our computations in the presence of the new and extremely fast CPUs is the amount of RAM. In any event, computing power is an enormous help to our research efforts and it is funded through NSERC http://www.nserc.ca, a world-class organization.

oCanadian Math Society:

I do a lot of volunteer work for the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). I am currently President-Elect and will begin a two-year term as President as of July 1. I have served on the board of directors, on the Finance Committee including a term as chair, and was Vice-President for Ontario in the late 90's. I also served on the Electronic Services Committee, I presume because I helped to create the camel, http://camel.math.ca. Camel is the CMS information server, and if you haven't visited it yet, you are due a treat, in my humble opinion. And please let us know what you think.

o

oSchoolNet:

I used to serve on the Contents and Services Committee of the SchoolNet Advisory Board. SN is sponsored mostly by Industry Canada, and a host of corporations and individuals. The idea is to get schools at all levels on the internet. The attraction for me was the potential for a meaningful interaction between universities and schools. If we're all talking to each other, things'll have to get better, won't they? Hmmmm. SN is an exciting place, cruise on over to http://www.schoolnet.ca and check it out. The CMS has helped out with some of the math stuff and we're hoping to do some more.

oDisclaimer:

Is there a page that isn't under construction? Well, Wehlau's page is under deconstruction http://www.mast.queensu.ca/~wehlau. I come in for a fair amount of abuse there, but don't believe a word of it.

oReviews, Soccer, WebStuff

This page was recently trashed, er, reviewed, by my soccer buddy, Bill Lucas. If you want to find out about all sorts of neat web thingies, you should visit his site at http://www3.sympatico.ca/dwl/

Do you like knots? Here are some nice ones from a "Braid of Knots" --- take a look from the camel.
