Grade 12:Forage and Fly

Forage and Fly

We have the foraging graph on the right and the searching graph on the left. For example if the bird spends T1 = 400 s foraging in a new patch it gains about E1 = 370 calories. If it leaves the patch and spends T2 = 200 s finding a fresh patch the search will cost it just over E2 = 100 calories. The objective is to maximize the net rate of calorie gain over a foraging day. For the example above, this is (E1-E2)/(T1+T2)=(370-100)/(400+200)=0.45 cal/s. How should it behave to maximize its rate of gain?
