* Research Around the Lab

The Communications and Signal Processing Lab is affiliated with the Mathematics and Engineering program, Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen's University. The Lab, which is located on the second floor of Jeffery Hall, is equipped with Unix Sun and Linux PC workstations, and signal processing apparatus. It is currently being used by graduate and senior undergraduate students pursuing research in information theory, communication theory and statistical signal processing. The purpose of the laboratory is to conduct research on the information theoretic analysis, design, implementation, and simulation of communication and signal processing systems, the stochastic modeling and performance analysis of communication networks, and the development of robust and efficient speech and image coding techniques for wireless multimedia applications. The Lab also houses Queen's Solar Radio Observatory whose objective is to investigate the harmonics emitted by the sun and the effects of solar flares on wireless communication.

The research projects of the Communications and Signal Processing Lab are funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada, Premier Research Excellence Award (PREA) of Ontario, Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Communications and Information Technology Ontario (CITO), Telecommunications Research Institute of Ontario (TRIO), Queen's Chancellor Award, Queen's Advisory Research Committee (ARC), Queen's Start-Up grants and the Ontario Access to Opportunities Program (ATOP).

The ongoing research activities are in the following areas:

  • Information Theory

  • Source Coding Theory and Vector Quantization

  • Error Control Coding

  • Digital Transmission Theory

  • Joint Source-Channel Coding

  • Coding for Constrained Channels and Symbolic Dynamics

  • MIMO Channels and Space-Time Coding
